About the Founder - Saint Montfort

Louis Marie Grignion de Montofort was born in a town called Montfort in North Western France on 31st January 1673. From his early childhood he led a virtuous life, was service minded and showed an extraordinary love for the poor. He had to undergo many trials and tribulations, but he emerged out of it with faith, conviction and courage. Always trusting entirely in God, and in keeping with his watchword “God Alone”. His deep affection and devotion for Mother Mary, earned him the name ‘Marie’.

He was ordained a priest and dedicated his life completely in the service of God and humanity. He traveled to many places preaching God’s love, compassion and the need for us to always be at the service of others. His students were mostly the poor and the oppressed and he successfully championed their cause against all odds. In his love for the poor he abased himself so much that he looked rather rugged in appearance.to this day.

Montfort was an educationist, he founded educational institutions largely in favor of the poor. His methods were practical, he emphasized on hard work and perseverance. He founded three charitable and religious societies to carry on his legacy. Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel are one amongst the others, who have been entrusted to carry on his mission of education for three hundred years. Presently, the Montfort Brothers educate about 2.84 million children and youth in 33 countries across the globe. They are instrumental in keeping the flame of education lit by the wise and holy man glowing to this day.
